Personal Biography:
Born to a career civil servant and a teacher, Njörlandr spent his
formative years spread out amongst Europe. His father, a civil servant, often fancied
himself a shade tree mechanic, rather than the mid-level manager he was on the job. His
mother taught high school wherever her husband (and family) were moved to.
Njörlandr grew up in a relatively normal fashion, discovering and developing an affinity
for engineering. Upon graduation from high school, he entered the University of
Helsinki. It was, in part, an effort to experience a part of his own family history,
as his grandparents were from the nordic region. It was also at this time that Njörlandr
entered the United Earth Military Reserve. This was a combination of many factors,
including his father's instilling of public service and a desire to experience new
things, develop new skills. Upon completion of a degree in mechanical engineering at
the University of Helsinki, Njörlandr entered the Iceland University of Education in
Reykjavik for a Master's Degree in education.
After graduation, he spent time as a high school level teacher. Not contracted to any
given school, Njörlandr spent time working all over Earth, with significant stops in
Singapore, Argentina, China, and Rwanda. During this time, he maintained his active
Reserve status with the United Earth Military, later transitioning from the infantry
to the 'navy'. He found the more naval traditions better suited for him, and remained
in space, rather than as a soldier on the ground.
Upon the foundation of Starfleet, Njörlandr applied to be included in the initial
transition. His application as an officer was denied, thanks to the rather deep pool
of candidates. Not deterred, he applied again as an enlisted transfer, directly from
the UEM Reserves, and was accepted. Although the uniform changed, the job did not,
and neither did Njörlandr's profession as a teacher.
It took the Xindi attack on Earth to change the status quo. Called into immediate
active duty, Njörlandr spent some months manning one of Earth's handful of ships
full time. After those months of anxiousness, Njörlandr was transferred to the NX
Drydocks to work as an engineer, taking advantage of his degree.
When the Xindi threat was over, Njörlandr was given the opportunity to remain on
active duty permanently, and with no teaching contract waiting for him, he accepted.
Although he bid for various positions on an NX-class ship, he was not selected. After
some time on the drydock, he was assigned to a few local defense ships, patrolling
the system. Although he would come to value his time and experience gained there, he
still felt he had more to contribute than running circles around the Sol system, and
continued to apply for NX positions while working hard where he was.
It was during this time, when Njörlandr suffered his transporter accident. While
conducting EVA suit refresher training, his magnetic boots de-magnetized and failed
to re-magnetize. Floating away, Njörlandr was locked onto by a transporter, and beamed
back to the ship. Unfortunately, he did not rematerialize properly. Rock and ore
particles were picked up along with his body, and in the re-materialization process,
Njörlandr's skin had been fused with those particles. Emergency surgery and later
treatments removed the major clumps of rock and metals from his skin, and effectively
saved his life.
However, the situation did not end there. It was soon discovered that the changes were
not just superficial, but rather, on a genetic level. His body, mostly his skin, had
been altered. The overall toughness had increased, and the colour pigment had changed
from the normal pink to an Andorian like blue. It took some time, but eventually it
was determined that the changes were not overly threatening to his life. While given
a clean bill of health, it would take many more months to fight to regain his medical
status for ship-borne duty.
Eventually, he noticed a position opening for instructors at Starfleet Academy.
Although not necessarily an outer space position, it would likely keep him in
Starfleet. With his previous teaching experience, even if on a different level,
Njörlandr felt he had a good shot, and applied to the faculty.
